で、提示された設定を見ると

> dovecotmail_location = /usr/local/virtual/%d/%u

ん? dovecotmail_location なんて設定項目あったっけか？
mail_location の間違いだと思うけど、ディレクトリの前に maildir: や mbox: 
といったプリフィックスが必要

を見直しましょう
